ABOUT US

The NHS is founded on principles of fairness, equality and opportunity. Every nurse should be supported to grow professionally based on experience, competence and commitment, not background or nationality. When these principles fail, speaking up becomes an act of courage.

Our Mission

Health Workers for Equity exists to promote fairness, dignity, and equality for healthcare workers by addressing bullying, harassment, victimisation, and racism within healthcare settings with the broader aim of promoting a safe workforce in what is a safety critical environment.

The organisation aims to protect the wellbeing of healthcare workers by raising awareness of workplace abuse and advocating for greater accountability and transparency in how such
issues are addressed. Workplace bullying and discrimination contribute to psychological harm, increased sickness absence, and the loss of experienced staff from the healthcare workforce, which in turn impacts the quality and continuity of patient care.

A recent briefing paper from the NHS Race and Health Observatory exposes the huge sums of money lost to inequality and the human price of discrimination across the health service, funds that could
be better spent on patient care and staff wellbeing initiatives.

A healthcare workforce that is treated with dignity, fairness, and respect is essential to maintaining public trust, protecting staff wellbeing, and supporting the long-term sustainability of the NHS for the wider public benefit.

Our Values

To empower healthcare workers by facilitating access to funding that enables them to obtain legal advice and, where necessary, pursue legal remedies through the Employment Tribunal.

To advance health and wellbeing by reducing the harmful impact of workplace mistreatment on the mental and physical health of healthcare workers.

To promote good governance and accountability in healthcare organisations by raising awareness of systemic practices that undermine fair treatment, workforce safety, organisational integrity and a lack of accountability on the part of senior
managers and the executive and non-executive board of directors.

To advance education and public awareness regarding the relationship between workforce wellbeing, sickness absence, staff retention, financial sustainability and patient safety within the NHS and wider healthcare systems.

“By promoting safer and fairer working environments, Health Workers for Equity
supports a healthier workforce, improved continuity of care, and more effective use of public
resources within the NHS.”
